CATAPULT'S FIRST SHOW

On Sunday, September 2, we took Catapult to his first show, the Canadian Warmblood Association Breed Show.  Other than being on a plane from Sweden, Catapult hasn't been off the property yet and he handled the whole show thing like an old pro!  No spooking or acting up even when he saw all of the dairy cows and scary equipment at the Hogendoorn's farm.

We entered Catapult in the Yearling Fillies and Colts class where the eldest yearling was 4.5 months older than Catapult.  In all honesty, we weren't expecting to place

very well due to Catapult being younger than most yearlings, having a jumper  pedigree, and being in a class with exclusively Dutch-bred yearlings who were being judged by a judge from Holland.

We had decided to enter Catapult in the show to see how he would conduct himself off the farm.  But Catapult remained so cool and calm and was awarded a fantastic 5th place!  We were so thrilled with his performance.  The judge commented that Catapult was a really nice horse with a great top line.  His only negative comments were that
Catapult's back legs had more of an angle and could have been more upright, and that his movement lacked elasticity (not something I deem critical for jumper-bred horses).  But to show you how good he looks at liberty, we've put a short video on his photo page where you can see him trotting and jumping.  He even threw in some "extras" with a lovely flying lead change and trotting over the oxer just to show how athletic he is.

We received so many compliments on the "very well behaved yearling" and a couple even hung out to watch him load after his class.  Catapult, true to form, calmly walked right on the trailer with the same laid-back approach he had taken all day.  Did we mention that he was the ONLY stud colt in the entire class and at the show?

We would like to thank Julie and Chris Dreyer of Starflowers Stables as well as Mike Armstrong for taking photos of Catapult at the show.

Julie's mare is in foal to Medallion and was bred with frozen semen and caught on her very first heat cycle.  We wish them a safe and uneventful arrival of their 2008 foal.

NO CONCORDE FOAL YET...

We had hopped to announce that Jamaica (imported buckskin Swedish Warmblood) was successfully re-bred to Olympic Concorde (KWPN) after loosing her first pregnancy earlier this year due to some unfortunate poor veterinary services....  There is a saying that good things are worth the wait, and unfortunately, we're going to have to wait a little longer for a nice Concorde foal.  After Jamaica had lost the first pregnancy, we brought her to a new vet.  She was all set to ovulate in early July and then her follicle filled with blood.  It took another full

month before we could breed her again, now early August.  We waited with baited breath for 15 days only to get the bad news last week that she is not in foal.  So... we plan on getting her back in to shape, re-breeding her in early 2008 and showing her on the National A Circuit but this time in the Hunter ring.  This girl is so versatile and simply loves to work.  After a brief, but very successful dressage career (with 4 x firsts, 1 x second, 1 x third, and 1 x fourth placement), we'd like to see how she goes over fences.

FARM UPDATE

We had planned on showing Olé this year in the Hunter ring but we feel that she's not quite ready yet and will continue her training until she gains the confidence needed to compete at the national level.  Olé is in foal to the gorgeous Holsteiner Hunter stallion, Cabardino.  The foal will have full papers with the American Holsteiner Horse Association (now a member of the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses), is due in June 2008 and is for sale in utero.

Our palomino Anglo-Trakehner mare, Irissari, is still in foal to the Dutch stallion, Consul, and is due in May 2008.  We will be taking video footage of her soon and putting it on the website.  She is still for sale in foal and also open after she foals next year.

Until next time, happy horsing!
